Will Home Renovations Affect My Septic System?

Can you renovate your home with a septic system? Well, this depends on what you are trying to do.

If your home renovations increase your water usage or change your structure's footprint, or if you add a swimming pool or storage building, you may need to get a new septic design and an add-on permit from the county.

For instance, the diameter of the outside spray area of your system must be 25 feet from your swimming pool. So you may need to move your existing spray heads. If you have a landscaping company install a sprinkler system, you need to make sure it does not interfere with the septic system.

Under no circumstances can a landscaping company replace septic spray heads with theirs. Septic sprinklers are, by state law, required to be purple so that it is evident that they are used for sewage. If you have a conventional septic system or an LPD or drip system, the same goes for those. You do not want to build on top or cover any part of your drain field.

Septic 101 Dos and Don'ts

What Not to Put in Your Septic Systems (OSSF)

Things that can harm your septic system include:

  • Excessive use of garbage disposal
  • Fat, grease, and oil
  • Too many cleaners
  • Too much fabric softener
  • Bleach
  • Cigarette butts
  • Diapers and wipes
  • Feminine products
  • Paper towels
  • Condoms
  • Q-tips
  • Paint, paint thinners, and varnishes
  • Kitty litter
  • Unused medicine
  • Drain cleaners and automatic toilet cleaners
  • Hair combings
  • Food
  • Fruit
  • Fruit peels
  • Fruit juices
  • Cola
  • Wine
  • Vinegar
  • Salad oil
  • Sugars
  • Coffee grounds
  • Dental floss

Items such as these can increase the cost of maintenance and tank cleanings. Even worse, they can lead to complete septic system failure. If you have any questions, please contact Pro-Tec Septic today.
